DiY Quinine

2015 — 2016

Performative

A series of performative tasting events, aimed at rethinking the histories of botanicals.

During the Symposium Doing Sounding Exchanging Thinking: The Auditory Experience of the Social (DSET) — Foundation B.A.D. (Rotterdam, NL) tonic water was created from Cinchona bark, through the use of botanicals and other ingredients that blur the borders between recreational and medicinal drinks.

Work developed within The Institute for the Design of Tropical Disease research project, in collaboration with Mike Thompson

As part of the events leading up to Sonsbeek ‘16, we performed a guided walk through Sonsbeek park with forest ranger Jeroen Glissenaar, visiting different plants and sharing the many stories that have allowed Sonsbeek and the city of Arnhem to co-evolve.

Collecting our own botanicals, we returned to Ruruhuis for some more Nongkrong - an indonesian term meaning ‘chat, without particular subject or purpose’ - making and tasting Sonsbeek-inspired Jamu, an Indonesian traditional medicinal drink made from different botanicals.
